CBD is the best-studied non-intoxicating cannabinoid in hemp. It doesn’t produce a high, that’s the job of THC, which is why hemp-derived CBD products are formulated to stay within legal THC limits. CBD is available in three main forms: full-spectrum (contains the plant’s other cannabinoids and trace THC, within legal limits), broad-spectrum (other cannabinoids retained, THC removed), and isolate (CBD only, no other plant compounds). Which one is right for you depends on what you’re trying to avoid or include, THC-sensitive users typically choose broad-spectrum or isolate.<\/p>\n\n
CBG is often called the “mother cannabinoid” because the plant produces it first, then converts most of it into CBD, THC, and other cannabinoids as it matures. That’s why CBG appears in far smaller quantities in the plant and typically costs more to extract. It’s non-intoxicating and is usually sold on its own, rather than blended.<\/p>\n\n
CBN forms as THC ages and breaks down, so it’s found in small amounts in fresh hemp and larger amounts in cured or aged material. It’s positioned in early research as mildly sedating, and is commonly sold as an evening or nighttime cannabinoid, sometimes blended with CBD or melatonin. Like CBD and CBG, it’s non-intoxicating at the concentrations used in hemp products.<\/p>\n\n
This is the single most useful distinction to understand before buying. Full-spectrum means every cannabinoid the plant produces, including trace, legal-limit THC; it’s associated with the “entourage effect,” the theory that cannabinoids work better together than alone. Broad-spectrum follows the same idea, with THC removed or reduced to non-detectable levels. Isolate is a single isolated cannabinoid, usually CBD, typically 99%+ pure, with nothing else from the plant carried through.<\/p>\n\n
