It was only discovered in the 1990s, decades after THC itself was first isolated, which is part of why cannabinoid research is still a comparatively young field.

The basic components

The ECS has three main parts. Endocannabinoids are compounds your body produces naturally; anandamide and 2-AG are the two best studied. Receptors, mainly CB1 (concentrated in the brain and central nervous system) and CB2 (concentrated in immune tissue), are where those compounds act. Enzymes break endocannabinoids down once they’ve done their job, the same way the body clears other signaling molecules.

Where plant cannabinoids fit in

Cannabinoids from hemp interact with this same system, though not identically to the way your body’s own endocannabinoids do. THC binds directly and strongly to CB1 receptors, which is what produces intoxication. CBD’s relationship with the system is more indirect and is still an active area of research; it doesn’t bind CB1 the same way, which is a major reason it isn’t intoxicating. More on the individual cannabinoids is on our Cannabinoids Explained page.

Why this matters as a shopper

Understanding that there’s an actual biological system involved, not just marketing language, is useful context for reading product claims critically. It’s also part of why individual response to the same product can vary: ECS activity differs somewhat from person to person, similar to other body systems.

This page is general education, not medical advice.
